The opposite is true. From early September through the week before Thanksgiving, roughly a half mile of Old Buckingham Road turns into a weekend circuit dense enough that most residents could plan a full autumn without ever pointing the car toward Short Pump. Here is what is actually on the calendar, where it happens, and how the pieces connect.

Everything below sits along or within a few minutes of the same stretch of road.

The date to anchor every other plan around is Saturday, October 3, when the 23rd Festival of the Grape returns to the Historic Courthouse District. The lineup this year leans harder into a curated feel, still centered on Virginia wineries but with cideries, breweries, and Virginia spirits invited into the mix. The KOS Band, an eleven-piece outfit that has worked the East Coast circuit for more than forty years, plays a live set from 2 to 6 PM.
Two practical notes worth memorizing before the day: outside food and beverage is not permitted, and wine is sold by the bottle to drink on festival grounds. Service dogs only. The event runs crowded.
If you have not been in a few years, the parking strategy has settled. Coming from the east side of the county, aim for 3920 Marian Harland Lane. Coming from the west, use the lot at Powhatan Elementary at 4111 Old Buckingham Road. Attendants direct from there.
County Seat's Fall Band Calendar

Two things stand out here that a first-time visitor would miss. The September 19 show is a benefit ticket, not a walk-in, so a table cannot save you. And County Seat books the wine festival day as its own thing rather than closing around the crowd, which means the block reads as one continuous event from mid-afternoon into the evening.
The September Warm-Up
Before the October pivot, September carries its own rhythm.
Friday, September 4 kicks it off with First Fridays Powhatan at 3825 Marion Harland Lane, with the Riverside Band on the bill starting at 6 PM. It is the kind of standing date that becomes a family habit if you let it. Bring the neighbors from down the road who never quite know what is going on downtown.
Two weeks later, on Saturday, September 19, two things happen in parallel. The Bill Deal show fills the room at County Seat while the Pawpaw Festival runs during the day. If you have never done a pawpaw tasting, this is your window; the fruit ripens in a narrow band and the festival is one of the few places in central Virginia set up to serve it in real quantity.
Then on Saturday, September 26, the Good Medicine 5K and One Mile Walk kicks off at 8:30 AM at 2320 Skaggs Road. It is small, it is local, and it is one of the rare morning starts on the fall calendar.
Quarterfield, Crazy Rooster, and the State Park
Not everything runs through the Historic Village. Three anchors sit outside it and deserve their own beat.
Quarterfield Markets at 3209 Buckingham Road held its grand re-opening on February 14, 2026, and its 2nd Saturday Festival is now a monthly touchstone. The August 8 edition starts at 9 AM. If you have been meaning to check it out since the re-opening and never made it, September and October are the months to fix that; the market crowd shifts noticeably with the weather.
Crazy Rooster Brewing Company books its own live music slate. Fourth Rail returns on Saturday, August 8 at 6 PM, and the Rooster's fall Saturday nights tend to fill without much advance warning, so a call ahead is not overkill.
Powhatan State Park runs a Movie Night on Saturday, August 22 at 8 PM, screening The Extraordinary Caterpillar. Bring a chair, a blanket, and a healthy tolerance for the mosquito situation near the river in late summer. By the time October arrives, the park's tree canopy along the James is the shortest drive in the county for real fall color.
The Weekly Anchors You Might Be Under-Using
Two standing dates get overlooked because they are always there.
The Powhatan Village Farmers Market in the historic Village runs a grower's model, meaning the produce, grass-fed meats, berries, honey, and baked goods on the tables come from the vendors themselves rather than resale. There are weekly food trucks and live music inside the market, which means a Saturday morning stop can quietly turn into a Saturday-morning-plus-lunch stop.
The Powhatan Farmstand Trail is the version for people who prefer their weekends spread out. The August 1 launch runs from 1395 Schroeder Road; the same route works into the fall if you build the day around it. Trotter Creek Farm's Willow Farm Stand at 1673 Rocky Ford Road runs its stand on Wednesdays from 4 PM, which is the kind of after-work stop that solves a mid-week dinner without a grocery trip.
Why the Corridor Matters
The thing that stitches all of this together is walkability inside the Historic Village and short driving distances everywhere else. A festival at the courthouse, a band at County Seat, and a Sunday morning at the farmers market can happen on the same block. Movie night at the state park is fifteen minutes away. Crazy Rooster and Quarterfield are on opposite ends of Buckingham Road but neither is a project to reach.
